"The
Summerland"
T.L. Schaefer
Mariposa is a beautiful
blink-and-you-miss-it Gold Rush town on the border of Yosemite National
Park. Sheriff Bill Ashton's life is good, quiet, until the bodies
of five women are discovered in the remote foothills and all hell
breaks loose. Then another woman disappears, leaving her estranged
sister's stolen car and half a million in cash behind as their only
clues.
Air Force Captain Arden Jones hasn't
spoken to her sister in years, but Samantha's disappearance galvanizes
her, sending her to small-town America in search of the black sheep
of the family.
Thrown together by circumstance, Bill
and Arden explore Samantha's disappearance and her probable connection
to the murdered women. Neither expects, nor welcomes, the attraction
that surges between them, or the fact that setting aside long-held
beliefs may be the only way to stop a madman bent on creating the
perfect woman, the one true goddess central to the Wiccan religion,
Diana.

Mystery
The plot is composed, and nicely so, of a number of diverse elements.
The bodies of five women, all shot in the forehead, are discovered in
a remote area near Yosemite. They are arranged in a pattern that indicates
they are, perhaps, the victims in some sort of ritual--although Sheriff
Bill Ashton is baffled as to the ritual's origin.
A red convertible containing a large amount of money is found in a rest
area. Its driver, a female, is missing--and her sister, Arden Jones, an
officer in the Air Force, arrives to add her presence to the mix.
There is a witch's coven operating in the vicinity.
And then there is the attraction--hot and immediate--between the sheriff
and the sister.
THE SUMMERLAND is a rich and fascinating read--one with likable characters
(except maybe the killer and a few others), a tangled plot, and enough
suspense to keep you up late at night. I even liked the ambiguity of the
resolution, the wealth of information about Wicca, and the small town
flavor. It didn't detract to have a sheriff who is a hunk with a brain
and a military woman with beauty and an attitude.

About
the Author:
Terri T.L.
Schaefer was born and raised in Mariposa, a rural enclave of Yosemite
National Park. After briefly pursuing a college education, Yosemite
Valley beckoned her homeward, where she lived and worked for five years
in the shadow of Half Dome. She met her husband in 1990, and was
married in 1991. Giving up her "real" job as a hotel assistant
manager and her off-time pursuits as a volunteer firefighter, she followed
her husband in his career as an Air Force medic. Since then they
have been all over the world, living in Portugal for three years and visiting
many European locales.
Terri has
been writing since before she can remember--everything from letters to
the editor to short stories. The Schaefers have since settled in
Northern Oklahoma where she works as an executive secretary for the Department
of Defense. The Summerland is Terri's first published work.
