Love's
Second Sight
Darragha
Foster
"Love's Second Sight" follows the paths of two lovers,
Thorgunna and Leif, battling natural and supernatural forces to
be together. Tricked into a condicio maliforae diabolicus with the
god of lies, the woman, Thorgunna, is locked into dangerous traditions
in a rapidly changing world. She is torn between two loves: her
island home, which she will defend with her life -- and the man.
The man is Leif -- an adventurous, roving hero from the farthest
reaches of her known universe, eager to explore boundaries of land,
sea and Thorgunna.
Although based upon stanzas contained in medieval Icelandic texts,
The Greenlanders Saga and The Saga of Erik the Red, this is a work
of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents, are the product
of the author's imagination, or are used fictitiously, and any resemblance
to actual persons, living or dead, establishments or locales is
entirely coincidental.
Eirik had a wife whose name was Thjodhild, and two sons, one called
Thorstein and the other Leif, both of them promising men. Thorstein
was living at home with his father, and no man then in Greenland
was held as promising as he. Leif had sailed to Norway, where he
was resident with king Olaf Tryggvason.
But when Leif sailed from Greenland in the summer, they were driven
off course to the Hebrides. They were a long time getting a good
wind thence, and had to remain there for much of the summer. Leif
took a fancy to a woman by the name of Thorgunna. She was a lady
of good birth, and Leif had an idea she saw farther into things
than most. As he made ready to sail away Thorgunna asked to come
with him. Leif wanted to know whether her people were likely to
approve of this, to which she answered that that was of no importance.
Leif replied that he thought it imprudent to carry off so high-born
a lady in a strange country. 'We are too few for it.'
'Don't assume,' said Thorgunna, 'you will necessarily find you have
chosen the wiser course.'
'That is a risk I must take,' said Leif.
'Then let me tell you,' said Thorgunna, 'that it is not just a
question of me alone. I am carrying a child, and that, let me tell
you, is your doing. I believe too that when this child is born it
will be a boy, and for all Your indifference now, the boy and send
him to you in Greenland once he can take his place among other men.
I believe too that having this son will prove just such an asset
to you as your present abandonment of me deserves. And I am thinking
I may come to Greenland myself before the game is played out.'
Leif gave her a gold ring for her finger.

About
Darragha Foster:
British poet W.H. Auden once said, "Few people take an interest
in Iceland, but in those few the interest is passionate." Darragha
Foster is passionate about Iceland. Of mixed European, Irish and
Syrian descent, Darragha's parents were often dumbfounded at her
driving passion to study Icelandic, the Viking Age, Norse Mythology
and the Icelandic Sagas. After a solo post-high school trip to Iceland,
Darragha's passion remained unquelled.
Since early childhood, Darragha's only career goal was to be a
writer. After publishing non-fiction articles (about Iceland and
the Viking Age), Darragha turned her hand to romance. Believing
one must write what one knows, Darragha wove the Icelandic Sagas
and delightfully naughty gods from Norse Mythology into the fabric
of her work. "Love's Second Sight" is Darragha's first
novel. It explorers the historical romance between Leif Eriksson,
Norse Explorer, and Thorgunna, the fabled Witch of Tiree. Loki,
the Norse god of mischief is Darragha's Muse. He insisted that he
be written into the novel as the "villain." Darragha complied.
The resultant story leaves the gods amused and readers fully engaged.
Darragha traveled to Iceland a second time, and the Isle of Tiree
(www.isleoftiree.net) while researching "Love's Second Sight."
She's proud to share that she lived what she wrote while in Iceland
and Tiree. Darragha says, "You'll have to read the book to
understand that comment! I'm a hands-on researcher."
Much to the chagrin of her husband, Darragha stalked a Klingon
Warrior at the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas. She was heard
to have cried, "But, he's so Viking!" as she was dragged
away by her family. Barring any future vacation mishaps, Darragha
makes her home in Washington State with her intrepid and patient
husband and athletic daughter. Darragha continues to write 'romance
of mythic proportions' while enjoying a full-time hobby as a middle
school secretary. You can share your love of Norsemen and Klingons
