The
Rescue of the Romanovs
Philip Hickey
Martin McCann, on the run from
the authorities in 1915, joins the British Army and soon finds himself
trapped in the futile carnage of trench warfare. To avoid a firing squad,
he volunteers for a special commando unit and is later recruited for the
mission of the century: the airborne rescue of the deposed Russian czar,
Nicholas II, and his family, whom the Bolsheviks have decided to execute.
The Rescue of the Romanovs is a story of warfare, savagery, and betrayal,
but also of kindness, loyalty, and love. Against the backdrop of a world
at war, the battle-weary McCann struggles with feelings of loss and outrage.
Cynical and cautious, and committed solely to his own survival, he remains
isolative and wary - until his heart is softened by the love of a woman.
