"Lost
Generations"
On the
planet of Delpe, eighty light years from Earth, 1300 human settlers, descended
from a stranded starship crew, have been at war with the crucnon, the
native intelligent species of insect creatures, for seven generations.
When a flying female named Jaddig Qarte crashes in human territory she
is befriended by human, Holly Jurjevics, Generation 7 Leader. Holly finds
the clicker (as humans call them)a compassionate creature with high moral
values, not the ruthless killer expected.
Later, it is accidentally discovered that Jaddig is genetically related
to Holly but how can this be so? And why has this information been suppressed
by earlier human generations? And who are the crucks, a new species
who attack both the human settlement and the crucnons? How will the humans
survive after being squeezed between two enemies? Will the long lost Earth
bases and shuttle craft, their one hope of leaving the planet be found?
And what of Jaddig and the thousands of her hybrid species? Where do they
belong?

Author Wayne South
Genre Sci-Fi / Futuristic
Eighty light years from Earth, on the planet Delpe, Holly Jurjevics and
1300 other humans are at war with the natives of the planet, the crucnon.
The humans have been steadily losing, and the leaders of the colony finally
reveal the origins of their settlement. When Holly befriends a female
crucnon, Jaddig, she learns that not all crucnon are as evil and ruthless
as her people have been led to believe. A small group of the humans, with
Jaddig's help, set out to find the lost landing area of the humans, in
hope of finding a starship or some method of leaving the planet.
Then, both humans and crucnon are attacked by a previously unknown species,
the crucks. As Holly, Jaddig, and others race to discover their origins,
new mysteries are revealed as quickly as answers are found. How is it
possible that Jaddig is genetically related to Holly? Who are the crucks,
and where did they come from? Why haven't the humans of Earth come looking
for the colonists? The answers lie hidden within the original human bases,
but will the answers be what Holly and the others hope to find?
Fast-paced and fascinating, I devoured Lost Generations as quickly as
I could. The premise is exciting a lost settlement of humans, unaware
of their origins, discovering the method in which they came to be stranded
so many generations ago and finding the technology their people had lost.
The politics of the story, displayed in the war between humans and crucnon,
later joined by the crucks, explore issues of government control and prejudice.
Some light romance helps to soften the story from time to time.
Wayne South has written a great book based on a premise that brings shivers
to my spine. Twists and turns in the plot kept me guessing, and I found
the ending completely satisfying. A wonderful science-fiction novel which
explores humanity and individuality, I highly recommend Lost Generations.

About
the Author:
After
a career as a teacher and principal of mainly small rural schools, Wayne
South writes both science fiction novels and contemporary novels under
his real name, Ross Richdale. He lives in the small university city of
Palmerston North in the North Island of New Zealand and is married with
three children. His wife, Kay, still carries the burden of teaching children
at a local primary (elementary) school.
After his wife and daughter go off to work every morning, Wayne shares
his living room with a black and white cat who demands to be fed at least
six times a day and a goldfish called Survivor who managed to survive
being dropped in a glass aquarium that was totally shattered. In this
congenial atmosphere, he pounds away on an ancient Macintosh to form the
characters and plots for his novels.
Ordinary people rather than the super rich, the super powerful or violent,
are the main characters in his novels. He is also keenly interested in
current events and uses international incidents as a backdrop for many
of his novels.
When he is not writing, Wayne enjoys drawing, usually on the computer.
Other interests include wandering in the countryside and, in the summer,
swimming in mountain streams or bounding through the rapids in a tractor
tire inner tube. Many of his novels reflect his interest in the rural
lifestyle as well as the cross section of personalities encountered during
his years as a teacher.
