Lion
of Scythia
Max Overton
Alexander the Great has conquered
the Persian Empire and is marching eastward to India. In his wake he leaves
small groups of Macedonian soldiers to wield military power over great
tracts of land and diverse peoples. Nikometros, son of Leonnatus, is a
young cavalry captain left behind in the province of Sogdiana, near the
borders of the fierce nomadic Scythian horsemen.
Captured after an ambush, he must fight for his life and the lives of
his surviving men. With the aid of a young priestess of the Mother Goddess,
he achieves a position of trust within the tribe. But not all Scythians
welcome his presence. The chief's son sees him as a threat to his own
position, and other Scythian lords have their own agendas. Nikometros
must play them off against each other as he seeks an opportunity to escape.
Complicating matters is a feeling of loyalty to the chief, and a developing
relationship with the young priestess.

Reviews:
From
the opening paragraphs, Lion of Scythia transports the reader to another
place and time. Max Overton captures the essence of who the Massegetae
were and makes them come alive by deftly weaving culture and religion
with history. Be forewarned, though, this is the first book of a trilogy
and there is no happily-ever-after ending. Instead, Mr. Overton subtly
mesmerizes you until you dare not stop reading and then he leaves you
hanging on a precipice, knowing you will return for more. After reading
Lion of Scythia it is easy to see why this first novel was a finalist
in the 2001 Eppie Awards.

Ivy Quill Reviews
Lion of Scythia is the first in a trilogy of fast paced,
action packed sagas of a Macedonian cavalry captain who has been captured
by Scythian warriors. He must battle to save his life and the lives of
two of his men. The Mother Goddess has saved his life for a reason he
does not understand, but the High Priestess of the Scythian's people has
deemed it so.
After proving himself a great fighter he earns the
respect of the leader of the People, enough so that in a rite of ceremony
he is made a blood brother to Spargises. But not everyone is as pleased
with Nikometros as is Spargises and his daughter, Tomyra, their priestess.
This blood exchange has angered Spargises son, Areipithes, to the point
of hatred. Areipithes vows to get rid of Nikometros at the first opportunity.
If his men can't kill Nikometros, he will have him dishonored to the People.
The young captain just wants to escape and return to Macedonia and his
people. But time has bonded him to the chief, and he feels a
passion for Tomyra he can't deny, even though it is forbidden for anyone
to marry a priestess.
This is a very well researched and well-written tale
in the time period of Alexander the Great. The fight scenes put the reader
side by side with the warriors, screaming, yelling, brandishing swords
and dodging arrows.
For a tale of epic proportions, Lion of Scythia is
the perfect choice for an action packed, fast moving book. Don't miss
it. This reviewer is looking forward to Mr. Overton's next book in this
trilogy, The Golden King.
