"Liberty
& Opportunity"
Ross Richdale
Liberty and Opportunity is the heartwarming
saga of four forthright, liberal women, spanning five generations, three
continents, two world wars, and one hundred years. As you read through
the women's diaries and listen to their stories, you will see through
your own eyes what it was like to be them and to live as they did. They
will become so real, you will feel as though you have known them all their
lives.
The story begins in 1898 with Amanda's elopement with her beloved Jack
and her struggle to survive and prosper away from her domineering father.
The two begin a new life in Vancouver, Canada where, over the years, she
develops a publishing empire. Her daughter, Dorothy, falls in love with
a soldier about to be charged for desertion from the trenches in the Western
Front. Will he be court-martialed and shot? And what is the "legacy"
that is runs as a thread throughout the novel?
Each individual story is filled with drama, joy, and sometimes tragedy,
but vividly illustrates the determination of each woman to enrich her
life through love of partners and families and liberal outlook on life.
Ross Richdale, writes in detail, giving you a bird's-eye view of every
event. His descriptions of events and scenery from snowy Canada, through
English country lanes, to the bush in New Zealand, leave the reader feeling
as though they have been transported to those places and times.
Liberty and Opportunity is a motion picture in words. You will laugh and
cry, and as the last page is turned, you will be left wanting more.

About the Author:
After a career as a teacher
and principal of mainly small rural schools, Ross Richdale writes both
science fiction novels and contemporary novels. He lives in the small
university city of Palmerston North in the North Island of New Zealand
and is married with three children. His wife, Kay, still carries the burden
of teaching children at a local primary (elementary) school.
After his wife and daughter go off to work every morning, Ross shares
his living room with a black and white cat who demands to be fed at least
six times a day and a goldfish called Survivor who managed to survive
being dropped in a glass aquarium that was totally shattered. In this
congenial atmosphere, he pounds away on an ancient Macintosh to form the
characters and plots for his novels.
Ordinary people rather than the super rich, the super powerful or violent,
are the main characters in his novels. He is also keenly interested in
current events and uses international incidents as a backdrop for many
of his novels.
When he is not writing, Ross enjoys drawing, usually on the computer.
Other interests include wandering in the countryside and, in the summer,
swimming in mountain streams or bounding through the rapids in a tractor
tire inner tube. Many of his novels reflect his interest in the rural
lifestyle as well as the cross section of personalities encountered during
his years as a teacher.
