"The Thief of Koromel"
Kenneth Burke

When his aristocratic family is murdered, circumstances force fourteen-year-old Jihan to go into hiding.  After many adventures as an itinerant beggar, a stable hand, and an assistant to the scabrous Kalto, once one of the most powerful magicians in the Vale of Sandahr but now fallen on hard times, Jihan will emerge as Datun, a master thief in the Vale’s capital, the fabled city of Koromel.  He has never forgotten what happened to his family and has never ceased trying to discover who ordered the murders and why.

With the help of Kalto, irascible and attached only to his eccentric camel, Mugg; Khedru, a cynical poet and philosopher; Valeron, a hard-eyed young mercenary from the far side of the world; and young Khyrra, herself an accomplished thief,  Jihan/Datun will begin to put the pieces together.  His father stood in the way of a plot to put a usurper on the throne and to encourage the reestablishment of the religion of the Dark Lady, a horrendous sect supported by an order of powerful and fanatical magician/priests.  Jihan and his allies set about to right the ancient wrong that was done his family and to restore justice and a legitimate government to the Vale.

About the Author:

Kenneth Burke has had a lot of jobs (bar tender and cab driver were his least favorite), but most of his working life has been spent as a secondary school teacher (history and English) in both the public and private sectors.  Currently he is a free lance writer living in Las Vegas, NV with his wife Joan. He is trying to get over his addiction to parentheses (although he still has a depressing number of relapses).
