Do you really want to
be published? Do you really want to sell your work? This book can
help you achieve your dream. Look to the future. Look to Cyber Space
for the newest, most exciting publishing avenues. Journey into the
New Millennium of literature.
I have not designed this book as a primer for the mechanics of writing.
There are plenty of those. Although I do touch on some of the basics
such as grammar, some writing exercises, how to get story ideas
and character profiles to kick-start the creative process, the main
purpose of this book is to help the writer get published. My second
goal is to show how to promote the work after publication. To accomplish
this task, I include a series of real questions and answers from
successful authors and comments from professional editors taken
directly from a survey that my column, Ask Dr. Web-Write, conducted
for Millennium Science Fiction & Fantasy Magazine did.
The general focus of this book is writing and selling fiction, but
the techniques and submission procedures apply to nonfiction as
well. Whether a person writes short stories, nonfiction articles,
essays or novels, using the tips in this book can help them get
published. The methods I talk about really work, and I know because
I've used them.
I address issues that concern professional authors as well as those
just getting started.
I have divided the information into seven parts:
1. What is electronic publishing?
2. Nuts & bolts of writing.
3. What are your rights?
4. Finding agents and publishers.
5. Self-promotion.
6. Alternative publishing ideas.
7. How to use this book effectively and the Appendix which includes
sample charts, graphs and a sample press release to help an author
keep track of his or her work.

Review of Jump Start Your Writing
Career with Electronic Publishers
Reviewer: Niki Taylor
The Writer (August, 2002)
"Although my college writing
courses were helpful, they didn't teach much about freelancing--and
certainly not about using the Internet to find writing markets.
Jump Start Your Writing Career with Electronic Publishers by S.
Joan Popek is the first book I've read that does both."

Highly recommended.
S. Joan Popek's JUMPSTART YOUR CAREER
WITH ELECTRONIC PUBLISHERS is an extraordinarily complete guide
for writers, specifically those interested in writing for electronic
publication, but also to writers trying to break into print as well.
Unlike many "how to" or
instructional writing or market books, JUMPSTART provides tangible
tips on how to submit your work, the importance of following guidelines,
etc., and quotes several publishers who state briefly what they
expect. This is no hastily thrown-together guide. As with all her
projects, fiction and nonfiction, Popek is a consummate professional
who painstakingly researches her subject matter and presents it
in an accessible manner.
Although JUMPSTART is useful to writers
generally, as the title promises, Popek focuses on the electronic
publishing industry more often than not in this book. Because it
is difficult to break into traditional print book publishing, e-books,
Popek explains, offer a less expensive alternative, and welcome
newcomers as well as established authors such as Stephen King and
Patricia L. White. It's, "the newest way to promote your work
and get noticed"-and while the merit of electronic publishing
and whether it should be taken as seriously as print publishing
can (and undoubtedly will) continue to be debated in various circles,
Popek (who has done quite well for herself as a writer in both electronic
and print formats and knows what she's talking about) leaves the
debate to others and instead offers everything from general advice
to specific information every writer can use.
The Nuts and Bolts section, in particular,
explains and covers copyright info, the difference between print
and electronic rights, and Popek also provides a course on how to
write, including sample writings and even a section on grammar.
While much of what is covered in JUMPSTART
is of value to all writers, it is primarily geared toward (and will
ultimately be of greater value to) the newer or beginning writer,
but if you are interested in learning about e-books and the electronic
publishing industry specifically, and how it can impact your writing
career, then Ms. Popek's JUMPSTART YOUR CAREER WITH ELECTRONIC PUBLISHERS
is a must-have reference guide for beginning and seasoned authors
alike. Highly
recommended.

An e-book separated into seven parts filled with some of the best
knowledge pertaining to the world of electronic publishing I have
ever read. She explains in great detail about the world of electronic
publishing, with an added plus on basic manuscript formats and how
to's.
In Jump Start, readers also get the
delight of reading some of Popek's short stories and some of her
great flash fiction stories. If you have never had the pleasure
of reading this woman's work, then you will get a small taste that
will leave you hungry for more.
In Jump Start, the reader will be
the lucky person that gets all the ins and outs of publishing. Popek
explains to readers how to promote themselves, the down and dirty
basics that all writers need to know. She has a chapter devoted
to agents and how they work. If you are in the process of getting
an agent, I highly recommend this chapter to you. Popek explains
all the needs of how and why agents work or don't work for the writer.
Popek also goes in detail about copyrights.
This is usually a subject that gets dug into so deep that the newer
writer gets confused and is ready to forget about putting pen to
paper, but Popek explains it in layman's terms that are easy to
understand. Popek also explains exactly what "electronic rights"
are and what they represent for the reader.
Popek doesn't stop there though. She
expands into explaining how to write that first story/novel and
make it workable. She talks about cliches, character traits, conflicts
and so much more.
Popek also gives her readers online sites who she highly trusts
and respects. I have been to quite a few of these sites, and appreciate
she tells her readers about them.
This isn't just a "how to"
book about electronic publishing. This is a book for the writer
inside all of us who is willing to take that extra step forward
into the world of publishing, and with an added bonus, Popek explains
the world of online publishing. I would suggest this book for print
or online writers.
