Blind-Sided

Monette Michaels
Janet Ferran, cot

Jeanette LaFleur, newly graduated and qualified as an ophthalmic technologist, starts her dream job as Clinical Coordinator for the Epi Project. When she discovers irregularities in record keeping for the project, she chalks it up to her predecessors' lack of organization and sets about fixing the problems.

But when she finds that records are missing or maybe never even existed, she takes her concerns to her boss, Dr. Byron Rutherford, the charismatic head of the project and a nationally renowned corneal specialist. While he expresses his concern, he assures her that it must all be a matter of poor record keeping and gives her carte blanche to fix the problems.

Except the problems aren't easily fixed.

As she digs deeper with the help of her current boyfriend, lawyer Charles Carter, and her deceased husband's best friend, Dr. Scott Fontenot, she becomes convinced that the project is a front for illegal activities. Medical negligence, fraud, and money laundering are just the tip of the ice berg. It is when the trio discovers that illegal body parts, and not just the corneas needed for the Epi Project, are being brokered through a corporation owned by Dr. Rutherford and a South American doctor that murder raises its ugly head.

Now Jeanette is running for her life, as Scott endangers his by traveling to Brazil to find enough evidence to convict the highly esteemed Rutherford.

From the corrupt streets of New Orleans to the steamy plains and jungles of Brazil, Blind-Sided twists and turns as torturously as the snakes that swim the bayous of Louisiana.

Monette Michaels
Janet Ferran

About Monette Michaels:

For the last twenty-three years, Monette Michaels has been a lawyer practicing everything from criminal defense to probate. A regular Renaissance lawyer. More recently, she gave up trying to change the system and narrowed her practice to being a professional neutral--which means she tries to help people solve their problems before they go in front of a judge or jury. Her philosophy is if you can't work within the system -- find a better system.

Aiding and abetting Monette in her life's goal of changing the world is her Pathologist husband of thirty-one years and her teenage son who is trying hard to be cool right now. They also own a large cat--or, more accurately, he owns them. They're still trying to figure that one out.

A life-long Hoosier, Monette currently lives in Carmel, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis and has a smaller home in Austin, Texas, in the Hill Country.

About Janet Ferran:

Janet C. Ferran is a native of New Orleans and as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician has worked as a clinician and researcher in the field of ophthalmology for the past twenty-eight years.

As Vice-President of Research and Development for Baltech, Inc. for the past thirteen years, she has worked on the development of an antiviral drug recently licensed to a large pharmaceutical company. Daily she can be found in the retina clinic at Ochsner Foundation.

In her spare time, she enjoys interviewing local ophthalmologists for her column Reflections in the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology Newsletter.

She shares her private life with her daughter Tina, son_in_law Matthew, and grandson Austin.
