"Polished
Veneer"
Gail
Fernhill , newly appointed of principal of a private school in Seattle,
Washington State is haunted by her past, but befriends new property manager
Neil Goodall. Neil pierces her reserve to support and help her when he
discovers that as a teenager, she killed her abusive father in self defense
.
However the case is reopened after the discovery of her father's rifle.
Lieutenant Peter Carrington attempts, by fair means or foul, to build
up a murder case against Gail and directs Tanya Brogan, an undercover
police officer employed by the school as a teacher, to find evidence.
However, after an accident involving a bus load of pupils on a ski trip
Tanya switches her allegiance to help Gail but unwittingly plays into
Carrington's hand as he anticipates she would do this from the beginning.
Intertwining with Gail and Neil's growing love and the conflicts of school
life, the plot develops when John McKendrick arrives at school and attempts
to abduct his daughter Penny,. Gail and Neil intervene but McKendric attempts
to shoot Penny. Gail stops him but is wounded and, with Neil and Penny,
is abducted. McKendrick is shot by the police and Gail, Neil and Penny
are later rescued. Gail, however, is left partly paralysed.
Penny's mother, Lynn McKendrick is a top criminal lawyer in the city who,on
learning of Gail's predicament, vows to help in her defense. She manages
to arrange a preliminary hearing where Gail, unexpectedly confesses to
killing her father but maintains it is self defense.
What happens? Is Gail's successful life as a principal about to be cut
short by her past. And what of her new disability? Is Neil's love enough
to helpher through these trying times?
This is another fast paced novel that combines human emotions into a gripping
story that will leave the reader wanting more.

About
the Author:
After
a career as a teacher and principal of mainly small rural schools, Ross
Richdale writes both science fiction novels and contemporary novels. He
lives in the small university city of Palmerston North in the North Island
of New Zealand and is married with three children. His wife, Kay, still
carries the burden of teaching children at a local primary (elementary)
school.
After his wife and daughter go off to work every morning, Ross shares
his living room with a black and white cat who demands to be fed at least
six times a day and a goldfish called Survivor who managed to survive
being dropped in a glass aquarium that was totally shattered. In this
congenial atmosphere, he pounds away on an ancient Macintosh to form the
characters and plots for his novels.
Ordinary people rather than the super rich, the super powerful or violent,
are the main characters in his novels. He is also keenly interested in
current events and uses international incidents as a backdrop for many
of his novels.
When he is not writing, Ross enjoys drawing, usually on the computer.
Other interests include wandering in the countryside and, in the summer,
swimming in mountain streams or bounding through the rapids in a tractor
tire inner tube. Many of his novels reflect his interest in the rural
lifestyle as well as the cross section of personalities encountered during
his years as a teacher.
